Each year we award a traveling trophy to the member who presented investments that produced the most money for the club. The person's name is engraved on the trophy and he or she keeps it at home during the following year.

Trophy rules

  1. At the end of each calendar year the winner is the member with the highest total capital gains and losses earned by investments he or she presented for vote.
  2. For a member to be eligible to win the trophy for a particular year, he or she must have presented at least one stock that the team held during that year.
  3. Broker commissions are included in the calculations.
  4. Unrealized capital gains and losses are included.  Stocks held at the end of the year are treated as if they were sold at the closing price with no commission and repurchased at the start of the next year at the same price with no commission.
  5. A member with a negative total is eligible to win.  If all eligible members have a loss, the smallest loss wins.
  6. The primary tiebreaker is the number of stocks presentations submitted during the year, including updates for stocks on the watch list.  The second tiebreaker is the single stock with the greatest capital gain during the year.
  7. In January the new winner's name and the year he or she won is engraved in a nameplate on the trophy.  The trophy is presented at the January meeting and the winner takes it home.  He or she brings it back at the November meeting and returns it to the person responsible for having the next nameplate engraved.
  8. The engraving is shamefully paid for by the person who made the least number of stock presentations during the year.  The tiebreaker is the person who previously paid for the engraving the least number of times.  A member who joined during the year is immune from paying for the engraving.
  9. If no one is eligible to win the trophy for a particular year, there is no winner.  The person with the most previous wins takes the trophy home for that year.  The tiebreaker is the person who most recently won.
  10. When there are only three empty nameplate positions remaining, the team votes on whether to add another layer to the base of the trophy or retire the trophy when all nameplates are filled.
  11. If the investment club disbands, the trophy is immediately retired.  If the club disbands in the middle of a year, a new winner is declared if the club operated for at least three months of that year.
  12. When the trophy is retired, the person with the most wins keeps the trophy permanently, starting one year after the last winner receives the trophy.  The tiebreaker is the sum of the capital gains earned by the person's investments during all his or her winning years.
